The Lover is a 1992 French film starring Jane March, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Michel Blanc. The story tells of an unconsummated love affair between a young married woman, Thérèse Raquin (March), and her husband's employee, Laurent Ledoux (Leung). The film explores the destructive force of adultery on both lovers and society. It was directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud from a screenplay by Pierre Dumayet adapted from the novel by Guy de Maupassant. "The Lover" is set in 1850s France during the Second French Empire under Napoleon III following the "Second Revolution". The film's protagonist is Thérèse Raquin (Jane March) who is married to a shipyard machinist named Léon Raquin (Tony Leung). Thérèse is the mother of four children, three boys and a girl. At the same time, Laurent Ledoux (Michel Blanc) comes to the town looking for work. As Laurent waits for his first job opportunity, he meets Pierre Dantan (François Cluzet), an artist befriended by Thérèse. Laurent spends time with Pierre and his wife Isabelle (Frédérique Bel), having their house as place to stay. He also meets Thérèse, who is attracted to him. When he saves her from being run over by a horse-drawn carriage, they become lovers. This clandestine affair eventually leads to the death of Léon Raquin, which was intended by Laurent as revenge against his employer for having slept with his mother 20 years ago. During the investigation into Léon's death, police inspector Popinot (Jean-François Balmer) discovers Thérèse's affair with Laurent and blackmails her into becoming an informant for him, requiring her to spy on Pierre's political activities. Thérèse begins to develop feelings for Pierre, which leads to her exile from the Dantan household. At the same time, she is deeply in love with Laurent and tells him so. They decide to run away together to start a new life in America. Before they leave, Thérèse calls Popinot and confesses to Léon's murder. During the journey Thérèse realizes that the relationship with Laurent means nothing more than revenge for her husband's death. She becomes sick at sea and nearly dies but recovers when she sees her children on board a ship returning from vacation. She returns home with them and leaves Laurent waiting for her in America. After the crew has departed, Laurent returns to France and, in an attempt to make up with Thérèse, he kills Pierre Dantan in a duel. As soon as Thérèse learns about Popinot's death in an accident and realizes that Laurent killed him and Pierre (whom she loved), she decides to leave him for good. In the end, it is revealed that she has been having an affair with her son Camille's tutor Mr. Prudent (Philippe Volter). She tells him that she will get rid of Camille. The closing scene shows her driving a boat into a stormy sea while Prudent stands by the shore waiting for her return. cfa1e77820
